Turkish coffee is one of those wonderful things that takes something that has become pedestrian and everyday (coffee) and by returning to roots brings back the wonder and joy of the ingredient.

우리가 일상적으로 마시는 커피. 그것과 비슷하기도 하지만, 여느 커피와 다른 제조방법을 가진 독특한 커피. 바로 터키 커피이다.

Now everybody and their dog goes to Starbucks or Coffee Bean or some swank local espresso joint. People swill their cafe latte and talk about the details of hand-drip. Turkish coffee ignores all that pretension. It is old school coffee. It is not for sissies. It a smack in the face of pure coffee flavor.

이제 많은 사람들이, 심지어 그들의 개까지도, 스타벅스나 커피빈 같은 화려한 커피 전문점을 찾는다. 어떤 사람들은 카페라떼를 마시면서 핸드드립 커피의 제조 방식에 대해서 이야기한다. 하지만 터키 커피는 그런 일반 커피와는 조금 다르다. 오래된 방식의 커피라고 할 수 있다. 그래서 터키 커피는 순수한 커피 본래의 맛을 지니고 있다.

Coffee nowadays is mostly brewed by dripping water through coffee in a filter (drip), or by pushing steam through the grounds (espresso). Turkish coffee isn’t simple, but it is a bit more essential than making coffee via machine. Coffee itself became popular initially in the Middle East and places like Turkey. The Ottomans were drinking it as far back as the 16th century. How important is it culturally? The Turkish word for breakfast, kahvaltı, literally means “before coffee”.

요즘의 커피는 대개 필터에 커피를 올려 놓고 물을 부어서 만들거나(드립커피), 스팀을 이용해서 만들어 낸다(에스프레소). 이러한 것들과 비교하면, 터키 커피는 그렇게 단순하지 않다. 기계를 이용한 커피 제조에 비해 터키 커피의 그것은 좀더 본질적이라 할 수 있다. 처음부터 중동이나 터키 같은 곳에서는 커피의 인기가 대단했다. 터키사람들은 16세기 무렵부터 커피를 마셨다. 문화적으로 이것이 얼마나 중요한 것인가? 터키어로 아침을 뜻하는 kahvalti는 본래 “커피 마시기 전에”라는 의미를 포함하고 있는 단어이다.

Unfortunately, there aren’t yet many places to get real, Turkish-style coffee in Korea. Your best bet is at Greek and Mediterranean restaurants. If you know of any good places, be sure and let us know.
