The Chosun Ilbo carries the tale of a man who made up a bibimbap story for the kiddies (Hat tip to Brian in Jollanam-do)

Woosuk University president Ra Jong-yil, 68, has recently published “The Bibimbap Story” in four languages, Korean, English, Japanese, and Chinese. He says, “Bibimbap is nutritious and delicious and can be made easily with various ingredients.”

Ra wanted to internationally promote Jeonju, home to bibimbap — the only Korean food served by domestic airlines and one of the most popular menu items on Korean restaurants abroad — by creating a story about bibimbap.

The fairytale is set in the town of “Ongoeul.” In the story, a boy called Jeje helps unite the townspeople by sharing food made by mixing each person’s ingredients. He said the idea struck while he was serving bibimbap to foreign guests while working as an ambassador to the U.K. and Japan for five years.

“The poems of Johann Goethe and Heinrich Heine made Loreley a popular tourist attraction. This fairytale will also deliver a lesson and lift bibimbap to become a culturally significant international food,” says Ra.

Ra has dreamed of being children’s author since he himself was a child. He has published children’s stories based on traditional tales since he was dean of Kyunghee Graduate School 20 years ago. He said that fairy tales, which create imaginary worlds, can also teach adults to seek humanism and common virtues.

한편, 우석대는 전주비빔밥의 부가가치 및 전주지명도를 높이기 위해 전주시와 공동으로‘비빔밥 범벅춤’과 세계인의 입맛을 겨냥한 ‘퓨전비빔밥’등 다양한 문화콘텐츠를 개발, 보급할 계획이다.

라 총장은 “비빔밥이 세계적으로 널리 알려져 있지만 정작 비빔밥의 본향인 전주에 대해서는 모르는 경우가 많아 안타까웠다”며 “비빔밥을 통해 전주를 세계에 알리고자 동화를 쓰게 됐다”고 말했다.

우석대는 이 동화를 관공서와 항공사 등 열독률이 높은 곳에 우선 배포할 예정이다.

한편 우석대는 전주 비빔밥의 부가가치와 전주의 지명도를 높이기 위해 전주시와 공동으로 ‘비빔밥 범벅춤’과 세계인의 입맛을 겨냥한 ‘퓨전비빔밥’ 등 다양한 문화콘텐츠를 개발해 보급할 계획이다. (연합뉴스)

The idea is cute – and has been circulating in Europe for centuries and collected by the Brothers Grimm: Stone Soup (including variants like axe soup, nail soup, button soup, and wood soup.) It also draws on other worldwide traditions, making the story a real 비빔 of ideas.
