Nanoomi.net is having a party! We want to give our readers a chance to meet some of our bloggers and hear about the new projects we’re rolling out.
나누미(Nanoomi.net)에서 블로거분들과 함께하는 파티를 개최합니다.

The event itself will be casual, with light food (including Korean tacos!), drinks, music and short presentations by some of our bloggers.
이번 파티에는 멋진 음악과 함께 맛있는 식음료가 제공되며 간단한 프리젠테이션을 함께할 예정입니다.

What Korean food will conquer?

If you’re reading this blog, Fatman assumes you like Korean food. And, if you like Korean food, you probably want to see all the other cool kids eating it, regardless of location. So, having already discussed the government’s recent ham-handed efforts to promote Korean foods abroad, along with private enterprises like CJ Food‘s “close, but no cigar” work with Bibigo, Fatman wants to ask:

What foods do you think have the most potential to become popular outside Korea? How would you bring it about? If you were an investor, in charge of bringing something to an outside audience, what tasty dish would you be putting your money on?

TEDxSeoul!

FatManSeoul has gotten right back into the swing of things by giving a short presentation on Korean food blogs, blogs about Korean food, and what this means for globalization and popularization of Korean food for TEDxSeoul‘s salon at General Doctor! Our action-packed 3 minutes (ok, 4 . . . you didn’t really think we could keep it that short, did you?) talked a lot about how Korean food blogs ended up taking their current form, and how it influences the food here, all while showing us the values and interests of diners. Korean food blogs are an anthropological goldmine of information! (more on that later . . .)
Speaking of food blogs, the Venerable Joe McPherson of Zen Kimchi fame also gave an invaluable talk on what works and what doesn’t in marketing Korean food to foreigners. There were even more fascinating lectures on the role of a Korean NGO in distributing food in Haiti after the earthquake (English, 한국어), the importance of food in the poems of Baek Seok, Korean drinking habits, and makgeolli! It was an amazing event, and everyone there was incredibly knowledgeable and interesting. Plus, great food and great drinks ~ could life possibly get any better?

We’ve fielded a few questions recently about our photography, and we thought we’d make a brief post talking about how we shoot. First of all, our equipment:

We use the Nikon D60, one of their entry-level DSLRs aimed at the casual user. While we sometimes use the AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II because it’s light and easy to haul around for long slogs, our workhorse lense is the Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 DC MACRO.

우리는 DSLR을 처음 사용하는 일반 사용자들을 위해 출시된 니콘 D60을 씁니다.

가끔 AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II을 쓰기도 하는데, 이 이유는 장시간 동안 일을 할 때 가볍고 쉽게 들고 다닐 수 있어서 입니다. 참고로, 우리가 주로 사용하는 렌즈는 Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 DC MACRO 입니다.

When absolutely needed and not disruptive to other diners, we sometimes haul out our Nikon SB-600 Speedlight Flash.

가끔은 음식점에 있는 다른 사람들에게 피해를 주지 않기 위해서 니콘 Nikon SB-600 Speedlight Flash를 쓰기도 합니다.

We do post-process our photos through a variety of programs, but primarily GIMP. Post processing is generally minimal, with minor adjustments to things like white balance and color so the food you see in the photos looks like the food we actually ate.

우리는 사진을 게재하기 위해 다양한 프로그램을 사용하지만 주로 GIMP를 씁니다. 일반적으로 게재하는 과정에 있어서는 화이트 밸런스나 색깔만 조금 수정하기 때문에 여러분이 사진을 통해 보시는 음식들은 실제 보이는 것과 별반 다르지 않습니다.

Are We Eating at the Same Place?

Fatman doesn’t usually take other reviewers to task for their writing. After all, everyone has different taste preferences and perceptions. One man’s meat is another man’s poison. But seriously, Korea Herald . . .
On the Border is authentic Mexican cuisine?!? Are you out of your ever-lovin’ mind???

It isn’t until halfway in the article that the writer mentions that it’s Tex-Mex, not Mexican food. Overpriced, over sauced, and over salted, OtB is about as authentically Mexican as Zorro and Taco Bell. So, now we’re asking readers for imput – where’s the real best place to satisfy your itch for authentic Mexican cuisine? Can it even be had here in Korea? What about other, better Tex-Mex?

Cafe Sobahn, part of CJ Foodville, is testing new concepts and needs expats’ opinions. Here are the requirements:

* foreign . . . and it probably wouldn’t hurt to be of legal age to consume food on your own in public, without parental supervision.

WHEN AND WHERE:

* Date & Time: 8/15 (Saturday) at 18:00 (6:00PM)
* Location: Café Sobahn at Seoul National University
* Directions: Located within the Graduate School of
Natural Sciences building, 1F (large modern
looking building made predominately of red
brick).
The building is located about 300 meters
from the main front gate – best to take
a cab from the Number 2 Green Line subway
Seoul National University station.
