ABOUT NANOOMI:
Nanoomi is the first site to bridge the Korean and English blogospheres, and the first case in which a well-established Korean media-tech venture, Tatter & Media, has funneled efforts into highlighting English-language blogs in Korea.

In the past, Tatter & Media (http://tattermedia.com/), which claims over 200 of Korea’s top “power bloggers” as its partners, had focused exclusively on Korean-language content. But, in response to worries about “linguistic isolation” on the Internet – in which people who speak the language interact only with each other online – Tatter is helping us get our expat bloggers an opportunity to reach a Korean audience. This is happening not only through the site, but also with podcasts and Android apps that are in the works.

Nanoomi is a “bridge blog” with writers who span the language divide with their content. For example, among Nanoomi’s 25+ bloggers:

Joe McPherson (ZenKimchi) will tell the world about Korean food, while also offering the Korean government and companies suggestions on how to market their food overseas.

Robert Koehler (The Marmot’s Hole) and Matt VanVolkenburg (Gusts of Popular Feeling) provide English-language readers translations of Korean news, document the country’s urban development and offer historical perspective on current issues.

Darcy Paquet and Tom Giammarco (KoreanFilm.org) open up Korean cinema to a global audience.

Simon and Martina Stawski (Eat Your Kimchi) provide a fun look into Korean life and pop culture through their entertaining videos.

로버트(The Marmot’s Hole)와 매트(Gusts of Popular Feeling)는 한국 소식과 역사를 번역해 제공하며 다시와 톰은 (KoreanFilm.org) 전세계 관객에게 한국 영화를 전합니다.
Please feel free to invite anyone who would be interested in this event. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Cynthia Yoo, Nanoomi’s founding editor (editor@nanoomi.net); Hannah Bae, Head Editor (hannahbae@gmail.com); or Hyeon Chol Yang (yang000n@gmail.com).

We hope you can join us on the 6th!

What foods do you think have the most potential to become popular outside Korea? How would you bring it about? If you were an investor, in charge of bringing something to an outside audience, what tasty dish would you be putting your money on?

Fat hat tip to reader Jaim, who apparently is triangulating efforts on samgak gimbap.

It’s been a hard decision to make, but Fatman finally has to listen to our concience. It’s been bothering us for a long time, but we’ve thought it over and are happy with our choice.

FatManSeoul is going vegan!

That’s right . . . there will be no more of this:

or this:

and certainly none of this:

But you will be seeing a lot more of this:

and this:

and this:

God knows, this will never cross our plate again! Just looking at it gives us the willies:

FatManSeoul has gotten right back into the swing of things by giving a short presentation on Korean food blogs, blogs about Korean food, and what this means for globalization and popularization of Korean food for TEDxSeoul‘s salon at General Doctor! Our action-packed 3 minutes (ok, 4 . . . you didn’t really think we could keep it that short, did you?) talked a lot about how Korean food blogs ended up taking their current form, and how it influences the food here, all while showing us the values and interests of diners. Korean food blogs are an anthropological goldmine of information! (more on that later . . .)
Speaking of food blogs, the Venerable Joe McPherson of Zen Kimchi fame also gave an invaluable talk on what works and what doesn’t in marketing Korean food to foreigners. There were even more fascinating lectures on the role of a Korean NGO in distributing food in Haiti after the earthquake (English, 한국어), the importance of food in the poems of Baek Seok, Korean drinking habits, and makgeolli! It was an amazing event, and everyone there was incredibly knowledgeable and interesting. Plus, great food and great drinks ~ could life possibly get any better?

We use the Nikon D60, one of their entry-level DSLRs aimed at the casual user. While we sometimes use the AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II because it’s light and easy to haul around for long slogs, our workhorse lense is the Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 DC MACRO.

When absolutely needed and not disruptive to other diners, we sometimes haul out our Nikon SB-600 Speedlight Flash.

We do post-process our photos through a variety of programs, but primarily GIMP. Post processing is generally minimal, with minor adjustments to things like white balance and color so the food you see in the photos looks like the food we actually ate.

Fatman doesn’t usually take other reviewers to task for their writing. After all, everyone has different taste preferences and perceptions. One man’s meat is another man’s poison. But seriously, Korea Herald . . .
On the Border is authentic Mexican cuisine?!? Are you out of your ever-lovin’ mind???

It isn’t until halfway in the article that the writer mentions that it’s Tex-Mex, not Mexican food. Overpriced, over sauced, and over salted, OtB is about as authentically Mexican as Zorro and Taco Bell. So, now we’re asking readers for imput – where’s the real best place to satisfy your itch for authentic Mexican cuisine? Can it even be had here in Korea? What about other, better Tex-Mex?
