삼복: Eat Your Samgyetang!

15 Jul 2009 In: explications 설명

For all those who missed it, yesterday was 초복 (chobok), the first of the three 삼복 (sambok). Supposedly the hottest days of the year according to the lunar calendar, these are the times that try men’s air conditioners and call for special nutritious foods like 삼계탕 (samgyetang: whole boiled spring chickens stuffed with jujube, glutenous rice, chestnuts, ginseng, and whathaveyou), 장어 (jangeo: broiled eel), 보신탕 (boshintang: you-know-what) and a host of other foods that fight fire with fire. The next one this year will be 중복 (jungbok) on the 24th, and the last one is 말복 (malbok) on the 13th of August. For a more complete discussion of 삼복, go visit an acorn in the dog’s food. Eat well!

Rumor has it that Daedongkang Beer is sporadically available south of the DMZ, and Fatman would be especially thankful for some leads on where we might aquire some. Anybody know? Has anybody tried 대동강맥주 before?

Fatman would just like to take a minute to remind everybody to please be respectful and considerate when commenting. We want everyone to feel welcome here, which means we also need to keep the comments on-topic and considerate of the feelings of others. This blog is moderated, and while we try not to remove anything that isn’t out and out offensive, please don’t say anything here that you wouldn’t say in front of your aged, ever-so-polite, and dearly beloved old granny.  Be gentle, for Fatman is awfully tender.

감사합니다!

Looks like Robyn Lee has just about wrapped up her coverage of Serious Eats: South Korean edition. She covered everything from Mister Donut to School Food to Sanchon to street food to back alley pork, in one of the most comprehensive sets of posts on Seoul food out there at any major foodie site.
